Study Permit

A study permit is an official government document that is issued to a foreign national which allows the individual to study at an approved designated learning institution in Canada. A study permit is typically valid for the length of an intended study program plus an extra 90 days (3 months). 90 days is granted to provide sufficient time for the individual to return home, extend their stay or apply for other status. Processing times for study permit vary depending on the country from which you apply.

Work Permit

Getting a Canadian work permit is mandatory in order to engage in any form of paid work. Currently, there are four types of work permits:

  • As a full-time student in a or post graduate or post secondary program you may work for 20hours on or off campus as long as you study at a designated learning institution (DLI) these remarks appear on your study permit under condition or remarks.
  • A co-op work permit is issued to a student who has a field placement, co-op, clinical study or practicum as part of their program. This allows the student to fulfill the program requirement for graduation while simultaneously gaining valuable work experience.
  • A post-graduate work permit is issued to a student who has graduated from a designated learning institution to gain valuable Canadian work experience. Note: work obtained through the post-graduate work permit program may help support your application to become a permanent resident of Canada.
  • An open work permit is a work permit that is not job-specific. Because it is not job-specific, you will not need a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada or proof that an employer has submitted an offer of employment through the Employer Portal and paid the employer compliance fee.
